Artist Statement
My current mosaic work is rooted in the Gibson Girl archetype - a century-old symbol of idealized womanhood preserved in the American psyche and reproduced on the china plates I break and reassemble. I choose the materials and imagery of domestic life as a way of looking at forces affecting the life choices women make. My interests stem from growing up during the emergence of the women’s liberation movement in the 60s and 70s, when the clash of ideas about a woman’s place in the world were contradictory, confusing and for me, foundational.
As women move beyond childbearing years, many sense themselves disappearing – their physical presence becoming as invisible as their labor. “Wallflower” looks at the aging woman in a culture that stubbornly links female power with fertility, youth and beauty.
